The Six Fitness App Features Members Actually Use Daily
Feature lists are easy to write and expensive to build. After a decade of shipping mobile products, we have a strong point of view on which fitness features earn their keep.
1. Visual progress, not raw logs
Members do not want a spreadsheet. They want a chart that makes last month feel different from this month. Progress visualisation is the single strongest driver of repeat opens we see in fitness apps.
2. One-tap booking with waitlist automation
Booking is table stakes. Automated waitlist promotion is the part that pays for itself, because empty peak-class spots become filled spots without a single phone call.
3. Streaks and consistency signals
Streaks change behaviour more than discounts do. Keep them forgiving — a streak that breaks on one missed day punishes exactly the members you are trying to retain.
4. Programmed plans, not empty templates
A plan that adapts to what the member logged last week feels personal. A static PDF in an app shell does not.
5. Fast nutrition capture
Macro logging only works if it takes seconds. Favourites, recent meals, and barcode scanning matter more than a database of a million foods.
6. Social challenges with real stakes
Leaderboards among friends and small groups outperform global leaderboards every time. Scope social features to the room, not the internet.
What usually underperforms
In-app chat nobody staffs, video libraries nobody curates, and gamified badges with no meaning behind them. Cut them from v1 and revisit with data.
